Exmoor and North Devon are popular UK destinations for family
holidays. The spectacular and varied countryside has something to offer
everyone and is easy to access from the motorway network; the
food and customs are familiar and the accommodation is safe for children.
The self catering cottages at Exmoor Cottage Holidays are ideal for families who prefer to be away from the hustle and bustle of the resorts. The charming stone-built cottages, converted from a medieval farm, are surrounded by large grounds in the peaceful village of Challacombe, which has good local facilities and is in an excellent central location from which to explore Exmoor and the spectacular North Devon coast. |
|||
| The cottages are well equipped for family holidays and will
sleep 4, 5 or 6 people in 2 or 3 bedrooms. Every cottage has a fully
enclosed garden and a travel cot, high chair, stair gate and
fire-guard are available without charge. There are clothes washing and drying
facilities either in your cottage or in a separate
laundry room.
Family pets are welcome.
The enchanting grounds are a wildlife wonderland for children. They can explore (at parental discretion) the paths up and around Humphrey's Hill, play in the Delve and scramble through the woods, build dens, play hide and seek in the long grass, investigate the wildlife pond, search for small frogs, lizards and slow worms and sample the seasonal fruit and vegetables from our vegetable garden. |

There is a village shop and Post Office within 300 yards of the cottages that sells groceries, snacks and drinks and you can place an advance order with them to be delivered to your cottage ready for your arrival. Beside the shop is an award winning family-friendly pub with a small playground in the garden, which serves very good home made food and real ales.
Within 100 yards of the cottages, children can play in the shallow ford across the river Bray, and roam a large beech forest. There are lots of excellent walks through the village, and on the surrounding hills you can visit Shoulsbury, a spectacular Iron Age hillfort; the source of the river Bray above Challacombe reservoir, and the source of the river Barle at Pinkery Pond.

There are literally hundreds of places to visit within half an hours drive to help you to get the most from your family holiday. Some of the attractions that are most suitable for children include:-
SANDY BEACHES: Miles of golden sands, ideal for sandcastles and sunbathing and with some of the best surfing in the UK at Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton Sands on the west coast of North Devon (15 miles). You may prefer the much quieter beach at Braunton Burrows, where there is a World Heritage nature reserve with huge sand dunes.
SECRET COVES: There are several small sandy beaches on the north coast (10 miles), for example at Combe Martin, Hele Bay and Lee, and lots of secret rocky coves such as Heddon's Mouth and Woody Bay.
VISITOR ATTRACTIONS: The excellent Exmoor Zoo (5 miles), the Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park (10 miles), the North Devon Farm Park (12 miles), and Watermouth Castle (15 miles). The major children's attractions at The Big Sheep and The Milky Way are about 40 minutes by car.
CYCLING: The Tarka Trail follows the level route of an old railway line along the coast and has spectacular views. There are several bike hire shops along the route, the nearest at Barnstaple (10 miles).
BARNSTAPLE: There is a play barn in Barnstaple (10 miles), a Superbowl bowling alley and North Devon Karting.
ILFRACOMBE: In the ancient harbour are boat trips for sea fishing or to visit Lundy Island. There is a small local museum, an aquarium and the Tunnels Beach, reached via a tunnel through the hillside (15 miles).
ACTIVITIES: Quad biking, horse riding and paint balling at Keypitts adventure centre (12 miles). |
